What to Know Before Your Snorkel Adventure with Bike and Kayak Tours, Inc.

Every summer, thousands of leopard sharks gather in the shallow, warm waters of La Jolla Shores—and you can snorkel right alongside them. It’s one of San Diego’s most incredible wildlife experiences, and at Bike and Kayak Tours, Inc., we help you do it safely, comfortably, and with zero stress.

If you’re planning a La Jolla snorkeling trip to see these amazing creatures, timing is everything. Here’s everything you need to know before you book.

When Do the Leopard Sharks Arrive?

Leopard sharks start showing up in La Jolla in late June, and peak numbers are typically seen from July through September. This is when the water warms up, the sharks come closer to shore, and conditions are best for snorkeling.

They gather here for two reasons:

  1. The shallow, warm water helps with their breeding cycles.
  2. La Jolla Shores provides a safe, protected environment – perfect for sharks and snorkelers alike.

Best Time of Day to Snorkel with Them

Morning is usually best. The water is calmer, visibility is better, and crowds are smaller. By mid-afternoon, waves can pick up and churn the sand, which reduces visibility.

We run guided leopard shark snorkel tours throughout the day, but for your best shot at clear views and a peaceful encounter, aim for a 9:00 AM or 10:30 AM tour.

How Close Do You Get?

You can get really close to the leopard sharks. These sharks often swim just a few feet from the shoreline in water that’s waist- to chest-deep. You don’t need to dive or go far—just float, watch, and let them come to you.

Leopard sharks are completely harmless to humans and are used to swimmers. Their sleek, spotted bodies glide silently through the water, and it’s one of the most peaceful encounters you can have in the ocean.

Do You Need Experience?

Not at all. If you can swim, you can snorkel with leopard sharks. Our guides provide full gear (mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit) and go over everything with you before you get in the water. We also tailor the tour to your comfort level and make sure you feel 100% ready before diving in.
